Boat Trailering Checklist: What You Need Before You Tow

A boat buyer reviewing a checklist with a dealer next to a boat on a trailer at a dealership

If your boat lives on a trailer rather than in a slip, towing it safely is its own skill — and its own gear list, separate from what's onboard the boat itself.

Before You Even Hook Up: Check Your Tow Vehicle

Before buying any trailering accessory, confirm your tow vehicle's rated tow capacity — this sets the upper weight limit for any boat-and-trailer combination you tow, and it's worth checking before you buy the boat, not after. It's step one of our boat buying checklist for exactly this reason.

Trailer Security

  • Trailer coupler lock — cheap insurance against trailer theft at the ramp or in your driveway
  • Wheel chocks — keeps the trailer from rolling while you hook up, unhook, or load at a ramp

Required for Safe Towing

  • Transom tie-down straps — secures the boat to the trailer for highway speeds, separate from the winch strap at the bow
  • Trailer spare tire cover — protects the spare from UV and weather damage between the (hopefully rare) times you need it

Don't Forget the Trailer's Own Paperwork

One thing buyers frequently miss: in most states, the trailer is titled separately from the boat. If you're buying used, verify the trailer has its own clean title with no liens — a detail easy to overlook when you're focused on the boat itself. Our full buying checklist covers this and the rest of what to verify before closing.

Inspect the Trailer, Not Just the Boat

If you're buying used, the trailer deserves its own inspection — frame rust or cracks, tire age and tread, working lights, and wheel bearing condition all matter as much as anything you'd check on the boat itself.
