Trawler Inspection Checklist: What to Check Before You Buy Used

Trawlers are almost always bought used, and they're also the boat category where the gap between "looks well cared for" and "actually is well cared for" is the widest. These are complex, self-sufficient vessels with systems most other boat types simply don't have.

A Marine Survey Isn't Optional — Budget for It

More than any other boat type on this site, a professional marine survey is essential here, not a nice-to-have. Budget $1,500–$5,000 for a thorough survey before any serious offer. Given how much a trawler costs and how much can be hiding in systems you can't fully assess yourself, this is genuinely cheap insurance relative to the purchase.

Diesel Engine Hours and Records

Request complete maintenance records, not just an hours count — a trawler's diesel engines are expected to rack up real hours over a long cruising life, and hours alone tell you much less than documented, consistent maintenance does. A logbook of service work is worth more than a low number on the hour meter.

The Generator Is Its Own Engine — Check It Separately

Don't let a healthy set of main engines distract from the generator, which runs on its own schedule and hours, powers everything when you're anchored out, and is just as capable of needing expensive work. Ask for its service history specifically, separate from the mains.

Through-Hull Fittings and Water Systems

Every through-hull fitting and seacock is a critical safety item — these are literal holes in the boat below the waterline with a valve controlling them, and a failed one is how boats sink at the dock. This is exactly the kind of thing a surveyor checks thoroughly and a casual walkthrough won't.

Also check fresh water, black water, and grey water system condition — trawlers run all three for extended self-sufficient cruising, and problems here are both unpleasant and costly to fix once you're living with them aboard.
