Take sailing lessons (ASA 101 through 104 at minimum) before buying. Charter a few times to confirm you love it. Annual costs include haul-out, bottom paint, rigging inspection, and marina or mooring fees.
Almost always bought used — excellent value exists throughout the market. Take ASA sailing lessons first. Look for Catalina, Hunter, Beneteau, Jeanneau, and Island Packet.
