Take sailing lessons (ASA 101 through 104 at minimum) before buying. Charter a few times to confirm you love it. Annual costs include haul-out, bottom paint, rigging inspection, and marina or mooring fees.

New vs. Used Sailboat

Almost always bought used — excellent value exists throughout the market. Take ASA sailing lessons first. Look for Catalina, Hunter, Beneteau, Jeanneau, and Island Packet.

  • Professional marine survey is essential
  • Standing rigging age — replace everything over 10 years old
  • Mast and boom condition, including all fittings and sheaves
  • Sail condition, age, and UV damage
  • Keel attachment — critical structural element, non-negotiable to inspect
