Used Boat Inspection Checklist

Boat-type-specific points to check before you buy, so nothing gets missed.

of 6 points checked

✅ Checks out on paper — still worth a sea trial and, for anything over $10K, a certified marine survey.

🛡️

Before You Inspect: Check the Boat's History

Run the Hull Identification Number (HIN) before you spend time on a physical inspection — it's a quick way to catch a stolen or lien-encumbered boat before you invest any more time in it.

🔍 What to Check on a Sailboat

Professional marine survey is essential

Standing rigging age — replace everything over 10 years old

Mast and boom condition, including all fittings and sheaves

Sail condition, age, and UV damage

Keel attachment — critical structural element, non-negotiable to inspect

Auxiliary diesel condition and service history

New vs. Used

Almost always bought used — excellent value exists throughout the market. Take ASA sailing lessons first. Look for Catalina, Hunter, Beneteau, Jeanneau, and Island Packet.
